A Black Tourmaline Protection Ritual for Empaths
August 26, 2026My sound cleansing ritual came out of necessity more than preference. I love the idea of smoke cleansing — the ritual of it, the smell, the visual — but a sensitivity to smoke makes it genuinely unpleasant for me, sometimes triggering headaches that undo any calming effect before it even starts. I needed an alternative that didn’t involve burning anything, and a small brass bell turned out to be exactly that.
The ritual is simple: I walk slowly from room to room, ringing the bell once or twice in each space, particularly in corners and doorways where I imagine stagnant energy tends to collect. No smoke, no residue, no lingering smell for anyone sensitive to it. Just a clear, bright sound moving through each room in sequence.
Why Sound Worked as Well as Smoke Did
I was skeptical at first that sound could do what smoke was supposed to do — there’s something so visually and sensorially complete about smoke cleansing that a bell felt almost too simple in comparison. But the bell’s sound carries its own kind of completeness. It fills a room fully for a moment, reaches every corner audibly the way smoke reaches every corner visually, and then fades entirely, leaving the space as it was but somehow reset.
What surprised me most was how immediate the shift felt. A room that had felt cluttered or heavy, even after physically tidying it, would feel lighter after a single pass with the bell. I don’t think this is really about clearing anything mystical so much as it’s about the deliberate act of attention — walking each room slowly, on purpose, noticing it freshly, with a clear auditory marker of “this space has been attended to.”
A Good Alternative for Smoke-Sensitive Readers
If smoke cleansing has ever appealed to you but you can’t tolerate the smoke itself — allergies, asthma, sensitive neighbors, apartment restrictions — a sound cleansing ritual is a genuinely complete alternative, not a lesser substitute. The bell does real work: marking a boundary of attention through each room, giving the practice a clear beginning and end the way a lit bundle of herbs would.

I still keep this in the same category as what I wrote about in protection and cleansing: 5 rituals that helped me find peace, and I’ll sometimes pair it with the intention behind my simple candle spell for home protection — bell first through the whole space, candle after in whichever room needs the most deliberate attention. Between the two, I’ve built a full cleansing and protection practice that never once requires opening a window to clear smoke.
